In January 2024, amidst the cold embrace of Chicago's winter, I along with Rohit Chavan and Sandip Jadhav embarked on an exciting journey to present a technical paper at the ASHRAE Winter Conference and exhibit at the AHR Expo. The snow-covered streets and chilling outdoor temperature underscored the significance of efficient heating systems in providing thermal comfort for occupants, even in the harshest of weather conditions. In this blog, I will narrate my experience in two distinct sections: the ASHRAE Winter Conference and the AHR Expo. Although both events occurred concurrently, they offered a diverse array of insights and experiences.
The ASHRAE Winter Conference
At the ASHRAE Winter Conference, I had the privilege of presenting a technical paper titled 'Methodology to Evaluate the Local Thermal Discomfort Parameters Using CFD Simulations in Compliance with ASHRAE 55 Standard.' This opportunity allowed me to present Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology for evaluating and analyzing Local Thermal Discomfort parameters. The accurate assessment of these parameters is essential in ensuring compliance with ASHRAE Standard 55 for thermal comfort along with the predictive mean vote (PMV).

Moreover, the methodology can assist in the identification of non-compliant occupant positions in relation to ASHRAE 55 standards. The session garnered a positive response from the audience, with engaging Q&A interactions following the presentation. Additionally, it was gratifying to see that copies of my paper were available for purchase, prominently showcased outside the conference hall. I also want to extend a special mention to my paper co authors - Ruturaj Patil , Aaditya Ruikar , Angirekula Venu , and Sandip Jadhav. Without their dedication and expertise, this endeavor wouldn't have been possible.
ASHRAE Paper Highlight
One of the standout moments of the conference was attending Mr. Robert Bean's enlightening session. His facilitation of the discussion forum on 'Why do we have chronic thermal comfort illiteracy in Architecture and Engineering?' sparked diverse perspectives from attendees. I've had the privilege of collaborating with Mr. Bean for technical webinar and online discussions in the past. However, this conference marks the first time I've had the opportunity to meet Robert Bean in person. As a dedicated advocate for Thermal Comfort, Robert's quote struck a chord with us: "People are the reason buildings exist."

During the course of the event, I had the opportunity to attend various paper sessions and seminars. One such seminar on 'Lessons Learned and Engineer Rules on CFD Applications in Data Center Design' provided valuable insights. In particular Mike Koupriyanov's presentation on 'How Wind Affects Your Data Center Building Design' shed light on the intricacies and challenges of designing data center infrastructure.During the breaks, while browsing through the other paper publications, a wonderful discussion brewed with a few budding engineers Sana Hafsa , Abin Paudel, E.I.T , and Ahmad Alkhateeb regarding the underappreciated aspect of thermal comfort in building design and shared a compelling perspective on the minimal emphasis placed on thermal comfort within LEED certification. The discussion converged to a point about the robustness of evidence required to achieve thermal comfort credits in certification frameworks and how CFD can play a vital role in that.
ASHRAE Meet
Additionally, we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Satish Kumar, a LEED and ASHRAE fellow. Engaging with him, we delved into various initiatives he leads within the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), particularly in the realms of energy efficiency and decarbonization. Furthermore, we had the honor of talking to Mr. vikram murthy, an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, whose expertise undoubtedly enriched our conference experience. These experiences underscored one of the invaluable benefits of attending technical conferences – the ability to connect with brilliant minds from around the world and exchange perspectives.
The AHR Expo
The AHR Expo
In the hustle and bustle leading up to the AHR Expo, our team rolled up their sleeves and got to work setting up our booth. Amidst the chaos of unpacking equipment, tightening a few bolts, arranging displays, and ensuring everything was just right, there was a sense of anticipation in the air. After hours of work the once-empty space had been transformed into an engaging and inviting showcase of our products and expertise. With everything in place, we were ready to welcome visitors and share our passion for revolutionizing the industry.
The AHR Expo - Day1
From Day 1, our team eagerly engaged in conversations with a diverse range of visitors, including Professional Engineers, HVAC design engineers, MEP consultants, and Equipment manufacturers. We took the time to understand their unique challenges and requirements, and we were able to effectively explain how our solution could cater to their specific needs. This personalized approach allowed us to establish meaningful connections and demonstrate the value of our offerings to each visitor.
The AHR Expo - Day2
On Day 2, while Rohit and I were busy presenting our papers at the conference, Sandip was running the show solo at the booth. It was quite the sight to see the boss stepping in, doing his magic to cover for us in our absence.

simulationHub was also featured in an interview by Joe Callahan from HVAC Insights.
The AHR Expo provided an exhilarating platform to showcase our Autonomous HVAC CFD app. Our booth attracted numerous visitors, reflecting a shared enthusiasm for innovation in HVAC technology. We had the pleasure of hosting industry experts at our booth, further fostering insightful discussions and collaboration within the field. Chris Deck, P.E. and team from iEng, Daikin Manufacturing México team, Mahabir Bhandari - Senior Research Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Ashu Gupta from D2O, Ulhas Keshavsing Vatpal CEO VATPAL industries, and Prof Ratnesh Tiwari CEO of NextGlass LLC who is developing next generation Vacuum Insulated Glass (VIGs).
The AHR Expo - Day3
On Day 3, we managed to take some time to explore other booths and delve into the latest technologies and innovations. It was truly enlightening to connect with Mr. Sachin Mhatre, MD of SACHINS IMPEX . They showcased an array of HVAC products that are poised to make a significant impact on the global stage. From enhancing thermal comfort to optimizing diffusers, these cutting-edge air distribution solutions are reshaping our understanding of indoor air quality. Additionally, it was a moment of pride to see our CFD simulations come to life! We had the pleasure of visiting Bray International, Inc. booth at the expo and experiencing firsthand the control valves simulated with simulationHub's Autonomous Valve CFD app. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing our collaborative efforts materialize.

Last but certainly not least, we had the pleasure of being neighbors with our dear friend and mentor, Anthony Amadio, PE CEO of First Dimension Software and PE Load Calcs, whose booth was conveniently located just in front of ours. Anthony proved to be a true crowd-puller, with an unlimited source of energy that never ceased to amaze. His profound understanding of mechanical HVAC design, load calculations, and energy compliance, particularly in the residential space, has been incredible. We are immensely grateful for his guidance and support throughout our journey.

My inaugural experience at the ASHRAE Winter Conference and AHR Expo was nothing short of inspiring. From presenting research to engaging with industry experts and unveiling innovative solutions, it reinforced the dynamic nature of the HVAC and building design landscape. As I reflect on this enriching experience, I am reminded of the collective commitment to pushing boundaries, driving progress, and ultimately, enhancing the quality of built environments for generations to come.As the curtains closed on a successful expo, we decided to make the most of our last day in Chicago by exploring two iconic landmarks: the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum. It was a delightful experience, filled with awe-inspiring exhibits and fascinating discoveries. However, the highlight of our visit was stumbling upon the LEED Gold certification displayed proudly at the Field Museum.

It was a fortunate moment that served as a reminder of the importance of sustainability and the impact of seeking out environmentally conscious initiatives. Truly, you see what you seek, even in unexpected place
