ASHRAE Standard 183 outlines the minimum requirements for performing accurate peak cooling and heating load calculations for buildings, excluding low-rise residential buildings. Compliance with this standard ensures that HVAC load calculations are conducted using reliable methods, with realistic inputs, and that they yield accurate, actionable results.
As stated in the Foreword of the Standard, accurate load calculations require both a technically sound calculation method and reasonable and realistic input assumptions. As the Foreword to Standard 183 says:
"Although there are many methods available to perform peak cooling and heating load calculations, the intent of this standard is to establish a minimum level of requirements that is as inclusive of as many methods as possible while being restrictive enough to mandate an appropriate level of care and accuracy. An accurate peak cooling or heating load requires not only that a sound method be used but also that inputs to the method are reasonable and realistic (the execution of the method)."
Buildings AI is a cloud-based agentic AI platform for HVAC load calculations and building energy modeling, powered by the EnergyPlus heat balance engine, enabling detailed, physics-based cooling and heating load calculations consistent with ASHRAE best practices. This article describes the extent to which Buildings AI complies with the requirements of the standard.

Methodology for Compliance Evaluation
Compliance has been evaluated against Sections 5 through 10 of Standard 183-2024. Each requirement has been classified as: Complies – Fully meets the requirement, Partially Complies – Meets intent but with limitations or indirect implementation, and Does Not Comply – Functionality not currently implemented.

Overall ASHRAE 183 Compliance Summary
Buildings AI demonstrates strong compliance with ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 183-2024, particularly in areas related to:
  • Weather data and design conditions
  • Heat balance–based cooling and heating load calculations
  • External and internal heat gains
  • Peak load identification across time
With an estimated 86% overall compliance, Buildings AI is well aligned with industry-leading tools and is suitable for code-compliant load calculations, early-to-detailed design analysis, and performance-based HVAC sizing workflows.
Buildings AI applies calculation methodologies consistent with the intent and technical requirements of ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 183-2024 for peak cooling and heating load calculations. Certain system distribution effects, such as duct leakage and fan heat, may require supplemental analysis depending on project scope and the authority having jurisdiction.
Future enhancements to system distribution modeling (fan heat, duct losses, leakage) would enable near-100% alignment with all system-level provisions of Standard 183.
